Pirate Broadcast #010

Well, another Christmas has come and gone. New Year's Eve is tomorrow, and a fresh start begins. Before the year ends, I thought I had better post this playlist. Hope you enjoyed it.

Tracklist:

1. Louis Austen - One Night In Rio - Louis is a classically trained crooner from Austria, and has been a part of the Euro electronic scene since the 90's. His output has included a duet with famed performance artist, Peaches. He has adapted the swing era crooner sound to modern day jazz rhythms and electronica, creating a sometimes cheezy sound.

2. Washington - Cement - Her full name is Megan Washington, but in her home of Melbourne, Australia she is known simply as Washington. "Cement" was initially released in 2009 on her "How To Tame Lions" EP, but due to the success of the song, it drove her 2010 "I Believe You Liar" album to #3 in the Australian Album Charts. This success also garnered her two 2010 ARIA Music Awards, for "Best Female Artist" and "Breakthrough Artist".

3. Casey Spooner - Faye Dunaway - American artist and musician, Casey Spooner's claim to fame is as half of the alt-rock band, Fischerspooner. Click on the song I.D. link to access his website, where you'll find a free download of the song available.

4. Chickenman - Costume Shop - I really didn't expect to throw any comedy pieces in my mix, but I suddenly got a tad nostalgic for this mid 60's radio show. After some searching on the net, I discovered this "bit" as a free download (here - click on the "Listen to the origin of Chickenman" link). It's basically a sample intended to get you to buy the set of CD's containing 273 episodes. I found it a great intro for anyone not familiar with it, as well as a humorous trip down memory lane.

5.
Colourbox - Baby I Love You So (12") - Released on the 4AD label in 2006, Colourbox were unlike the rest of their stablemates, such as The Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, since their sound wa reggae and dub based, often including snippets of found sound and dialogue from various film sources. This track, a Augustus Pablo cover, is a perfect example of their dub and dialogue collages. The band went on to collaborate with Britpop band A.R. Kane under the name M/A/R/R/S, and left their mark in dance music history with "Pump Up The Volume".

Hope you stop by in the new year. Thanks for dropping by, and keep on tuning into Radiojive. You just never know what he'll play next.....

Pirate Broadcast #008 and #009

Looks like I need to play some catch-up here. Been kind of busy lately, but here are the playlists for the last two segments.

Pirate Broadcast #008 - My anti-war statement....

1. Paul Hardcastle - 19 (Boys to War - 25th Anniversary Version) (Radio Edit) (2010) Paul doing the Smooth Jazz thing nowadays, but this Anniversary re-do of his 1980's classic shows his revolutionary spirit is still alive.

2. Propellerheads - History Repeating (DJ Zazoo'z 2010 "It's All The [war] Rage" Knee Length Mashmix) (1997) My simple reworking of a classic. Click on the link to hear.

3. Beach Boys - Student Demonstration Time (1971) Taken from their 1971 album Surf's Up, this track just goes to show that the surfer geeks could write a pretty mean protest song when push came to shove.

4. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - War (1984) "Frankie Say War: Hide Yourself" This slogan came about after the initial release of "Two Tribes", but this cover of Edwin Starr's classic 60's protest song took on new meaning in the new millenium. A bit of a rarity, it appeared on the 2003 release, "Rage Hard: A Sonic Collection", as well as an Uncut Magazine compilation.

5. Phil Ochs - I Ain't Marching Anymore (1965) This 60's protest singer enjoyed poking fun while sing against the war and social injustice. Also check out his "Small Circle of Friends".

Pirate Broadcast #009 A return to a more modern variety.

1. ceo - Come With Me (2010) The debut single from these Swedes have the Guardian UK newspaper calling them the New Band of the Day - No. 805.

2. Monarchy - It Must Be Love (2010) This marks a return to Radio Zazoo, (see #003) and hey, these guys were also New Band of the Day - No. 678.

3. New Pornographers - Crash Years (2010) Neko Case and the boys return with this rollicking new single from the new album "Together". Love the whistling. It's pretty infectious!

4. Mose Allison - Young Man Blues (1958) My one reflection on the past, this song was made famous in the rock genre when The Who performed it for their "Live At Leeds" recording. His songs have been recorded by many. Click on the link and discover a wonderful talent.

5. Admiral Radley - I Heart California (2010) Indie supergroup, comprised of members of Grandaddy and Earlimart, has (had?) this single as a free download on their website here. Check to see if it's still available by submitting your email address. The song is a poignant stab at the idiosyncracies of the West Coast sun-worshippers.

White Lies Mini Tour 2011

Anyone who's a regular listener to Radiojive.com will recognize the band White Lies. Live Earl Jive has "Death" in fairly high rotation, and it's become a fave of mine. So news of a mini tour in the new year promoting their new release, Ritual, is exciting news. The only trepidation I have is the comment that the new album will be "less English sounding". Mmmmmm....that's kind of what attracted me to the band in the first place. But i am keeping an open mind. In the meantime enjoy the song as I've linked to above.

From the Radio Exile blog, Nov. 8, 2010:
London’s White Lies recently announced that their new album will be called Ritual and that it will be released on Jan. 17, 2011. The long-awaited follow-up to 2009's No. 1 album To Lose My Life… has been produced by former Depeche Mode collaborator Alan Moulder in London and will be available in a 7-inch single box set as well as vinyl and CD editions.

The band have also announced their first set of stateside dates to kick off the New Year. The 4 city run in support of their sophomore release, Ritual, that will see the band giving their fans on both coasts a taste of their new music in their exciting live show! Their highly anticipated sophomore effort Ritual will hit on January 18 via Geffen/Fiction.

The album was completed this year at the end of an 18-month world tour in which they have supported Coldplay, Kings of Leon and Muse. Those close to the band have said the record will include many international influences and be much less English-sounding than their debut.

Tour Dates
1/22 Neumos, Seattle, WA
1/24 Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA
1/27 Highline Ballroom, New York, NY
1/29 The Mod Club, Toronto, CAN

As it stands, it appears tickets are only on sale online for the last two dates. So New York and Toronto, get 'em while you can.

(This message crossposted on the "Music" and "Announcements" boards of the CFNY Spirit of Radio Discussion Forum and this blog.)

12/30/10 - This CD will finally see a Canadian release on January 18, 2011. Pre-order now at Amazon.ca.

PiRatE BrOAdcAsT #007 (Bond....James Bond)

Thought I'd have a little fun with this one. Since this is number "007". I decided to make it a spy-themed set.

Tracklist:
1. Tape Five - A New Mission/ Tango For A Spy/ A View To A Kill (feat. Iain Mackenzie) - Tape Five are one of the many nulounge/nujazz bands with a retro based sound, influenced by the 60's spy film soundtracks, amongst other things. I couldn't resist putting these three together. They just work so well.

4. Laika and The Cosmonauts - James Bond Theme - Hailing from Finland, the band have been doing their brand of surf rock for over 20 years. As you can tell, they too are obviously influenced by many of the same sounds as Tape Five
, (not to mention the obvious sounds of The Ventures) but with a slightly different output. On this track, guitarist Mikko Lankinen nails that famous guitar riff with just the right amount of fuzz and reverb......a truly excellent version.

5. Vicki Carr - The Silencers - A staple in Las Vegas, Vicki was a part of that 60's lounge sound. Here she sings the theme to one of Dean Martin's Matt Helm movies.

6. Matt Bianco - Whose Side Are You On? - We go back to the 80's for this one. The band pokes a little fun at the genre.

7. Nancy Sinatra - The Last of The Secret Agents - The theme from the spy spoof film, from 1966. The highlight was this "Boots"-inspired song....very tongue-in-cheek.

RaDIo zAzOo PiRatE BrOAdcAsT #006

Here's the playlist for the next set of Radio Zazoo broadcasts,

1. Hannah Georgas - Bang, Bang You're Dead (2010) Taken from her This Is Good CD, Hannah was the darling of CBC Radio 3 this year. A lover of 80's music, as witnessed on her website blog, she continues to write interesting pop songs with a retro influence.

2. The Cure - Just Like Heaven (1987) Formed in 1976, The Cure are still going strong, touring and releasing new material in 2009.

3. Angelique Kidjo - Voodoo Child (Slight Version) (1998) African-born, Parisian-raised, Angelique Kidjo's jazz training and Dark Continent culture infuses a different take on popular music. This cover of Jimi Hendrix is a perfect example.

4. Andy Bell - Call On Me - Erasure's vocalist releases another solo CD, this initial single undoubtedly inherits the Erasure sound for this highly infectious dance track. Click on the link to Andy's website to hear more from Non Stop, including a duet with Jane's Addiction's Perry Ferrell!

RaDIo zAzOo PiRatE BrOAdcAsT #005

I know it's been a while, and I'm keeping the "interruption" to Radiojive.com to a minumum. No more 60 minute broadcasts....so here's the playlist for #004:

1. Hurts - Better Than Love (2009) Peaking at No. 50 in the UK charts, Paul Lester of The Guardian put it so succinctly - "This electro-pop boy-duo look as though they've been styled by Helmut Newton, directed by Anton Corbijn and produced by Trevor Horn on a Martin Hannett tip". Touché.....

2. Syrinx - Tillicum (1971) To Canadian TV viewers, this was better known as the theme to "Here Come The Seventies", a show looking at what the future was bringing.

3. O.Children - Dead Disco Dance (The Golden Filter Remix)  (2009) The return of Goth Rock.....influenced by Nick Cave & The Birthday Party, Bauhaus, and The Mission, to name a few, be on the lookout for their first US single, "Ruins".

4. The Blue Van - There Goes My Love (2008) Just one of many singles taken from their "Man Up" CD, this Danish band's 70's influence is evident on the entire album. Click on the link to go to their webpage for samples from all four of their albums. You may also recognize this track from an iPad commercial.

Propellerheads - History Repeating Anti-War Remix

As the quote goes, "necessity is the mother of invention", and to properly segue a track in a show you'll be hearing soon, I decided to play around with the Knee Length Mix of the song. The result of my efforts is offered up here for you.

I hope I have successfully managed to change the fashion angle to an anti-war one.

Not really a straight remix, I incorporated the intro of Country Joe & The Fish's famous Woodstock performance and the battle FX outro of the studio version of the same song. That's why I decided to call it a "mashmix".

Whatever you want to call it, I hope you enjoy it.

mp3 - Propellerheads - History Repeating (DJ Zazoo's Knee Length "It's all the [war] rage" Mashmix)

RaDIo zAzOo PiRatE BrOAdcAsT #004

Well, it looks like I managed to "jam the Jive" for about an hour with this one....A real mixed bag, but I hope you liked what you heard.

Volia! The playlist:

01. Mystery Jets - Dreaming of Another World (2010) - Another import from Oz, inspired by the 80's.
02. China Crisis - Wishful Thinking (1984)
03. The Mary Onettes - The Night Before The Funeral (2010) - A new single from this Swedish import. They, too, are highly influenced by the 80's. You can hear similarities with China Crisis in this one, whom they followed in the playlist.
04. JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys  – If You Let Me (Bob Clearmountain Mix)(2010) - Finally, a new single from Chrissie Hynde (of The Pretenders). her new effort is a collaboration with Welsh musician, JP Jones. A rollicking good time song. Good to have you back, Chrissie.
05. Blossom Dearie - Comment Allez-Vous? (1957) - A renowned American bebop jazz singer, famous for her "girlish" voice, this French lesson is a perfect lead in to the Art vs. Science track.
06. Art vs. Science - Parlez-Vous Francais? (2009) - Voted #2 in Triple J's Hottest 100 for 2009 (Mumford & Sons' "Little Lion Man" took #1), this Aussie band's manic single just has to be heard outside of the island. If I'm not mistaken, the video for the song was voted Best Video of 2009. Stay tuned to Radio Zazoo and radiojive.com for more from this power trio.
07. Bebu Silvetti - Spring Rain (1977) - A slice of Italo Disco, rarely heard outside the discos of 1977, this song evokes memories of friends dancing the merengue on a half-empty dancefloor.
08. Squeeze - Cool For Cats (1979) - A classic in the punk/pop style, this one's an early 7 inch. FYI, these cats just released some new material. Another reason to stay tuned to Radio Zazoo and radiojive.com....you might here it!
09. The Like - He's Not A Boy (2010) - A song that could have been penned by Josie & The Pussycats working together with The GoGo's, this power pop single is totally infectious!
10. The YardbirdsLost Woman (1966) - The famed blues/rock band of the 60's who gave the world Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, gives us this compelling track from 1966. It was covered in the 70's by The James Gang on their "Live In Concert" album.
11. Fantastic Plastic Machine - Steppin' Out (Costes Re-edit) (1998) - Famed Japanese DJ and master remixer, FPM cover Joe Jackson. This particular version was re-edited by Stephane Pompougnac for one of his Hotel Costes cafe chillout CD's.
12. Smashing Pumpkins - French Movie Theme (2005) - A lost track.... a B-side? .....a throwaway? Maybe, but also fun.....and a great segue into.....
13. Claudine Longet - Un Homme et Une Femme (1967) - Upping the "cheese" factor a bit here, and keeping with the French theme, here's the wife of singer Andy Williams and killer of Olympic skier Spider Sabich, with her interpretation of the famous theme from the 1966 Oscar-winning film of the same name.
14. Mary Hopkin - Those Were The Days (1968) - Signed to The Beatles' Apple label, this is Mary's "one hit wonder", a Russian-themed love song that topped the charts back in'68.
15. BB Gabor - Moscow Drug Club (1980) - A Toronto-based musician with a promising career, taken from us far too early, this was chosen simply for it's perfect lead in by the Mary Hopkin's track.
16. Fanny - Hey Bulldog! (1972) - One of the first all-girl rock bands, Fanny's cover of this Beatles track got lots of airplay back on the free-form FM of the early 70's.
17. Paul AnkaLovecats (2005) - The Cure never sounded so sexy! taken from Paul's album, Rock Swings, of rock covers done with a swing/jazz arrangement and orchestration. Might be considered high on the cheese factor if it wasn't engineered and produced so well and with so much class.
18. King CrimsonCatfood (1970) - With lead vocals from bassist Greg Lake, this doesn't know whether to take itself too seriously or not. Like cats themselves, the song evokes a certain playfulness, not forgetting the underlying mysteriousness of cats. A true classic, standing tall beside their other classics, like "21st Century Schizoid Man" and "The Court of The Crimson King".

RaDIo zAzOo PiRatE BrOAdcAsT #003

Well it seems that the Live Earl Jive is still baffled by my signal. Perhaps he is slowly coming to terms with it. Maybe some kind of arrangement can be made here.....if he wasn't so stubborn and played some of these requests!!!!

Sorry......back to business at hand.....As you may have noticed, I've been a little slow in putting up the playlists lately.

Again, I threw together what could almost be considered a Saturday Night Party Mix. That's the feeling I got after listening to it in it's entirety for the first time. Old habits die hard, as they say, since I wa always the one putting the music together at parties.

Still tiring of the current CFNY playlist, when there is so much more out there. Radiojive.com is doing a great job, but I think even he needs to be enlightened every once in a while...... and that's where Radio Zazoo comes in.

Being a fan of the old CFNY, my current ear for new music is based on the notion of "If the station were still around today with the old incarnation of Marsden, Jive, Pete & Geets, (to name a few) and with Hal Harbour's creative input, (......yes, and Alan Cross) would they look to indie synthpop, folk rock, and real (not corporate) punk?" And Classic Rock to them would be the 70's/80's/90's that is now regularly programmed on AOR Hit stations.

Like radiojive.com, I love mixing up genres, and if Earl won't play some of the lost CFNY sounds, like those off the early New Music Search CD's, then I will.....and hijack his signal to do so! Case in point, I hope you enjoyed hearing The Marvelous Beauhunks again. That song is "classic rock" to me.

And in case you're interested, no Romo's were harmed in the making of this, or any future, broadcast.

01. The Avalanches - Since I Left You -
Oz sample artists extraordinaire...a breakup song that feels so good
02. Super Furry Animals - Juxtaposed With You -
Good feeling song #2
03. The Blow Monkeys - It Doesn't Have To Be That Way -
Good feeling song #3
04. Jane's Addiction - Superhero (Theme from Entourage) -
Love the show. Why isn't this them a hit?
05. The Hives - Tick Tick Boom -
For no other reason, this rocks AND it seques nicely from Superhero.
06. The Blue Seeds - Lost Highway
- Love this....and so would David Lynch, I'm sure...and they're Canadian!
07. Anjulie - Boom (2010) -
Some cool T.O. soul, with a teensie hint of psychobilly (!?)
08. Groove Armada (feat. Bryan Ferry) - Shameless -
Taken from the new CD. Stroke of genius using El Ferrari.
09. Memory Tapes - Bicycle -
Great new band out of Jersey, signed to Rough Trade...one to watch
10. The Marvelous Beauhunks - Fantasy Merry-Go-Round (1991) -
Taken right off the CFNY 1991 Modern Rock CD.
11. Nerf Herder - Courtney -
A loving tribute to Mrs. Cobain.....you gotta love her
12. Monarchy - The Phoenix Alive -
Another one to watch. For fans of New Order, Depeche Mode, etc.
13. Jimmy Smith - The Cat -
Great classic Hammond B3 jazz....what groove!
14. Patty Duke - Retirement Benefits Application (Public Service Announcement) -
One of Romo's final acts of revolt, no doubt....I can't explain how that made it out there....

Stay tuned to Radiojive.com....more to come.....

Romo Released

He served his purpose. He got my signal up and running. I then blindfolded him, drove around a major city and released him into the wilds of the concrete jungle. I'm sure he will be found and returned to his family, who have also been released. But if that duct tape doesn't hold, I'll know where to find him!

For those listeners, here's the tracklist for the second pirate broadcast:

1. Klaus Nomi - Samson and Delilah, Aria (Saint-Saens) (live) (1981) - A tortured soul...his true calling was opera, but he made his mark in NYC covering Frankie Valli.
2. OMD - Sister Marie Says (demo) (2010) - The first new song in 9 years!!
3. Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good (DJ Zazoo Secret Diary Extended Mix) (2006) - The theme from Secret Diary of A Call Girl, extended just a bit, by me.....
4. Teenage Fanclub - Baby Lee (2010) - TF's latest single.....it HAS to be heard!
5. The Magnetic Fields - Nothing Matters When We're Dancing (1999)
6. May Blitz - Smoking The Day Away (1970) - A lost 70's treasure, rarely heard on air.
7. Miss Li - Bourgeois Shangri-La (2009) - From Apple's iPod nano commercial...truly infectious.

NOTE: No Romos were injured in the construction and execution of this endeavour.

Jamming the Jive: Pirate Broadcast #001

Since the Live Earl Jive has consistently refused to play any of my requests, he has left me no choice but to crack his satellite access codes and jam his Radiojive signal so that I can play the music that I think should be heard. You were warned, Jive! It's too late for sympathies now!

Broadcasting from somewhere on the planet in the old analog CFNY mobile recording studio , previously used for Thursday Night Live concerts and Chris Sheppard's pirate radio, I am holding Geets Romo hostage to help engineer my plan of musical jihad. He complies, or I kill his dog - simple as that!

If you managed to catch the initial "hijacking", you'll have heard there were some technical difficulties getting that signal clear. But once it was up and running, it sounded great for a while.

So if anyone's interested, here's the tracklist for the four songs that managed to make it on the air:

1. enLounge - Intro
2. Billy Idol - Adam In Chains
3. Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny Come Home (Mousse T. Cocktail Mix)
4. Sonic Animation - Pull The Trigger

Damn you, Jive! I was just getting started!

I'LL BE BACK !!!!!!!!!
