Pirate Broadcast #008 and #009

Looks like I need to play some catch-up here. Been kind of busy lately, but here are the playlists for the last two segments.

Pirate Broadcast #008 - My anti-war statement....

1. Paul Hardcastle - 19 (Boys to War - 25th Anniversary Version) (Radio Edit) (2010) Paul doing the Smooth Jazz thing nowadays, but this Anniversary re-do of his 1980's classic shows his revolutionary spirit is still alive.

2. Propellerheads - History Repeating (DJ Zazoo'z 2010 "It's All The [war] Rage" Knee Length Mashmix) (1997) My simple reworking of a classic. Click on the link to hear.

3. Beach Boys - Student Demonstration Time (1971) Taken from their 1971 album Surf's Up, this track just goes to show that the surfer geeks could write a pretty mean protest song when push came to shove.

4. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - War (1984) "Frankie Say War: Hide Yourself" This slogan came about after the initial release of "Two Tribes", but this cover of Edwin Starr's classic 60's protest song took on new meaning in the new millenium. A bit of a rarity, it appeared on the 2003 release, "Rage Hard: A Sonic Collection", as well as an Uncut Magazine compilation.

5. Phil Ochs - I Ain't Marching Anymore (1965) This 60's protest singer enjoyed poking fun while sing against the war and social injustice. Also check out his "Small Circle of Friends".

Pirate Broadcast #009 A return to a more modern variety.

1. ceo - Come With Me (2010) The debut single from these Swedes have the Guardian UK newspaper calling them the New Band of the Day - No. 805.

2. Monarchy - It Must Be Love (2010) This marks a return to Radio Zazoo, (see #003) and hey, these guys were also New Band of the Day - No. 678.

3. New Pornographers - Crash Years (2010) Neko Case and the boys return with this rollicking new single from the new album "Together". Love the whistling. It's pretty infectious!

4. Mose Allison - Young Man Blues (1958) My one reflection on the past, this song was made famous in the rock genre when The Who performed it for their "Live At Leeds" recording. His songs have been recorded by many. Click on the link and discover a wonderful talent.

5. Admiral Radley - I Heart California (2010) Indie supergroup, comprised of members of Grandaddy and Earlimart, has (had?) this single as a free download on their website here. Check to see if it's still available by submitting your email address. The song is a poignant stab at the idiosyncracies of the West Coast sun-worshippers.

White Lies Mini Tour 2011

Anyone who's a regular listener to Radiojive.com will recognize the band White Lies. Live Earl Jive has "Death" in fairly high rotation, and it's become a fave of mine. So news of a mini tour in the new year promoting their new release, Ritual, is exciting news. The only trepidation I have is the comment that the new album will be "less English sounding". Mmmmmm....that's kind of what attracted me to the band in the first place. But i am keeping an open mind. In the meantime enjoy the song as I've linked to above.

From the Radio Exile blog, Nov. 8, 2010:
London’s White Lies recently announced that their new album will be called Ritual and that it will be released on Jan. 17, 2011. The long-awaited follow-up to 2009's No. 1 album To Lose My Life… has been produced by former Depeche Mode collaborator Alan Moulder in London and will be available in a 7-inch single box set as well as vinyl and CD editions.

The band have also announced their first set of stateside dates to kick off the New Year. The 4 city run in support of their sophomore release, Ritual, that will see the band giving their fans on both coasts a taste of their new music in their exciting live show! Their highly anticipated sophomore effort Ritual will hit on January 18 via Geffen/Fiction.

The album was completed this year at the end of an 18-month world tour in which they have supported Coldplay, Kings of Leon and Muse. Those close to the band have said the record will include many international influences and be much less English-sounding than their debut.
