The J Awards 2012

As anyone familiar with this blog knows, I am a big fan of the Australian music scene. I don't know what it is down there - the water, the desert, the roos. Their artists are truly creative, and there is a wide diverse pool of musicians and their respective genres from which national radio station, Triple J, can pull from to broadcast.

Their promotion of indigenous artists, through their Unearthed program, offering up free downloads of unsigned talent, is second to none. This fact alone (free mp3 downloads) puts them way ahead of CBC's Radio 3's play-only artist's page offerings, in my humble opinion. (Also, is it just me, or does most Canadian indie bands lean towards a folksy, country sound? Apologies to Austra, Grimes, Crystal Castles and others of their ilk.) Back to the Unearthed program, a band's popularity is judged by the number of downloads, a surefire indication of popularity. This, of course, makes them that much more enticing to trolling record labels, or if they decide to put out their own release. Add to this, the regular rotation of many of these bands on Triple J, and you have amazing support. This recalls CFNY's New Music Search programs, and how it helped many an indie artist in the Greater Toronto Area.

The J Awards are Triple J's version of CFNY's old You-Know Awards, awarding indie and commercial acts for their talents. Unlike the You-Knows, the judging is done by committee at the station, not by the listeners. (Not for anything, they get their chance to vote at year-end for the infamous Hottest 100.)

Wanna peak into what they consider the cream of their crop in music? Click on the link to the J Awards page, and troll through the nominated acts. You will find video and audio for most, to give you an indication of the artist's sound and talent.

The J Awards 2012

Let me complete this posting with a song nominated for "Best Video". The song is called "Hands" by the band Alpine. It's a very surreal entry, so be forewarned.

It should also be noted that the winners of the J Awards will be announced at the end of November. So, stay tuned. I shall try and follow up with a timely list of the winners.

And now, Alpine......

Lana Del Rey - Ride

I felt compelled to share this. This woman is redeeming herself, in my eyes, since that infamous SNL appearance. Please revisit her past videos. They are just as creative.

In the meantime, step into her world for ten minutes as she portrays a hooker/biker moll, as she "rides" through life, on this, her latest single.

Radiojive is Alive and Rogue

You need to stay on top of things as Radiojive moves around in cyberspace. Until finding a permanent location, the Live Earl Jive has been busy searching the country for some server space.

Enjoy it while you can (maybe only for a week!) at the present location:

Stay tuned to Radio Zazoo for more updates. The links in the top right corner will remain unchanged until a permanent link has been created.

And please support Radiojive.com with a donation through Paypal to earljive@yahoo.com. Let's help keep the music flowing.

UPDATE - August 14, 2012:  Looks like this stream is working again, for the time being.

The Presets - Youth in Trouble

Aussie electronic duo, The Presets, unleashed a preview of their upcoming Modular Recordings fall release, Pacifica, on Triple J radio this past weekend. Youth In Trouble begins with a Moroder-ish/"I Feel Love" synth line, which carries through as the base track. Layers of effects and Julian Hamilton's Gahan-ish vocals add to the DM homage.
As an added bonus, the band and Modular are giving away a free download of "The Finger Prince & Light Year Remix" of the track, if you subscribe to the record company mailing list. Click  HERE to take advantage of this promotion.

In addition, timed to coincide with this release, is a psychedelic, kaleidoscopic video created by New York visual artist Yoshi Sodeoka. Last month, Sodeoka released a similarly effects-laden Yeasayer video for their song, Henrietta.

Be sure to click to Full Screen for this one, as the imagery is mind blowing. This is one of those clips that needs a large scale video wall in the club to really take full advantage of the aural experience. In the meantime, just be satisfied with your computer screen.

Diamond Rings: He's Just Him

Over the past few years, Diamond Rings (aka John O'Regan) has been touted as "someone to watch" on the Toronto indie scene. His synthpop sound has grown, matured, and evolved. Yesterday, Pitchfork unveiled the release of the single and video, entitled "I'm Just Me", from his upcoming sophomore release on Secret City Records. Co-produced with Grammy-nominated Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Killers, UNKLE), the full-length album is scheduled for release later this year.

In the meantime, we have the Rings' video here, for your listening and dancing pleasure. Directed by Jared Raab, it's a return to the over-produced synth/dance videos of the 80's, complete with smoke, mirrors, and lasers, and a look and wardrobe that appears to have been ripped right from Klaus Nomi's closet - the retro-futurist costume, with the over-accentuated shoulders is a nod to the camp and kitsch of those wonderfully nascent productions.

Radiojive Returns!!!!!

The search for a new server has been successful. Due to certain circumstances, Radiojive had to sign off temporarily until a new virtual home for it could be found.

But the sounds are back! Click on the (revised) iPhone/iPod link in the top right corner of my blog to log on (or at the end of this article). At the time of this writing, the radiojive.com page had yet to be updated.

As humbling as it is to ask for financial assistance from listeners, I'm hoping that Earl will pass along a Paypal account we can use to help prevent the removal of Radiojive from the cyberspace airwaves again. I shall report back with any further news. People are paying for satellite radio, so why not a quality internet station like RJ.

In the meantime, enjoy the sounds of Radiojive once again.

June 26, 2012 - Seems that Radiojive.com's return was temporary, as it once again fell silent. But do not despair, The sounds of RJ will return. Stay tuned......

Cold Cave - Dark synthpop freebie

Anyone miss those darling dark/goth synthpop bands of the 80's?  Cold Cave should satify that empty hole in the dark part of you mind nostalgic for some darkwave electronica.
Recently signed to Matador, they've released a full length called Cherish The Light Years, after a few indie cassette releases over the last few years.

I wanted to bring attention to a b-side free download available from Matador. If you find yourself thinking "if this is a b-side, I wonder what they bring to their A game?", then be sure to pick up or download the new album.

For more info (and sounds), check out the band's Matador page and their MySpace page.

PEACE in our time

You can add these Birmingham, England boys to that never-ending "next big thing" list. Advance word has it that these lads are about to insinuate themselves into the iPod playlists of American teenagers very soon. A recent signing to Columbia Records shows that they are well on their way.

They were another "New Band Of The Day" back in January, in Paul Lester's Guardian column, where he compared them to a cross between Foals and Wu Lyf.  In March, they turned up on the NME's "Radar Band of The Week". Supporting acts like The Vaccines, they are part of an exciting new scene of indie rock.

You should be able to find some demo videos and independently produced things on their website. Be forewarned about a Google search - there are a few bands named Peace, or with the word "Peace" in them. But perseverance will pay off with some interesting work. In the meantime, here's a taste of the band. (Dare I say, "give PEACE a chance"?)

Here's the video for their first single release, "Follow Baby". Enjoy.

Ting Tings - Hands (Acoustic Version)

Found this totally by accident, it was posted on You Tube in 2010. The original is in regular rotation on Radiojive. For all all the fans of the song, enjoy this beautiful, stripped-down, slowed-down, acoustic version, filmed live.

Pirate Broadcast #015 and #016

I'm Back! My schedule in life, as it has been, was a tad hectic. With my daughter visiting from Rome, free time to work on "jammin' the 'Jive" has been somewhat unavailable to me. But since she has returned, and the showcase festival season came and went, there is loads of great new music and artists to become acquainted with, alongside some (lost?) old favourites.
Pirate Broadcast #015

1. The Courtesans - Venus In Furs (2012) - Not to be confused with the other Courtesans, these girls' interpretation of the Velvet Underground's classic comes across like heroin for the ears. The drone of the original is not only intact, the benefits of modern production pumps up the bass and drums, creating a sound that would not be out of place in a Goth club. A featured piece here at Radio Zazoo, shows off the beautiful, stylized video. Hopefully, any fears that these gals may be "this year's t.A.T.u.", will be unfounded. They have yet to show us anything original, but I'm sure that will come in time. Oh, and a shout out to bassist Agnes Jones for becoming a Member of the Radio Zazoo blog!

2. Grimes – Oblivion (2012) - Already being hailed by critcs/yahoo's as "This Year's Austra", Montreal resident Claire Boucher's alias and band, Grimes, is finally getting some overdue recognition. Her innocent, high-pitched vocals create an upbeat element to the rhythm of the dark synths. Click on the link to her home page for a video of this song. Don't forget her MySpace page for more music.

3. Jane's Addiction - Been Caught Stealing (Virgin Magnetic Material 2011 Remix) (1990) - Well, these boys may have some new material out that they're also touring in support of, but I thought I'd revisit this classic with a more laidback, dance beat. Dropping the maniacal original melody in exchange for a calmer, (dare I say?) respectable (?) sound was a creative inspiration for the VMM team. It may not be to everyone's taste, and some may call it sacriligious, making it a synthy dance track, but it's certainly interesting.

4. The Pale – Butterfly (1992) - Now here's one of those tracks some might consider "lost". Truth is, these guys are still pluggin' away. Check out my story in an earlier entry below re: some new music they're about to release. Twenty years later, I still find myself getting that damned chorus stuck in my head!

5. Crybaby - I Cherish The Heartache More Than The Love Lost (2012) - Attention all you Morrissey fans!!!! Stop me if you think you've heard this one before! Yes, the UK press is all over the resemblance. The Guardian's Paul Lester honoured him with their "New Band of The Day" feature on March 8. More than an ordinary tribute, singer Danny Coughlin draws from not only The Smithmaster, but crooners Orbison and Presley to round out his influences. Be sure not to confuse Danny's band with the many other Crybaby acts found around cyberspace. I believe he's the only one residing in the UK.

6. Piero Piccioni - La Decima Vittima (Take 5) (1965) - Ending off this broadcast is just a portion (faded out early) of the theme to Elio Petri's 60's sci-fi film, The 10th Victim. The Farfisa organ sound of 60's Italian soundtracks has gone from being cheesy to cool again, thanks to a growing interest in exotica and lounge.

Pirate Broadcast #016

1. Mike Oldfield - Family Man (1982) - His website may not be as up-to-date as one would like (last entry was July 2011), but then again this man is not at the top of the charts these days, unless you are looking at the New Age Top 40. Try his News Service, if you're interested in what he's currently up to. Before his modern classic, Tubular Bells, Mike 's early works (Family Man, Moonlight Shadow, Five Miles Out), with vocalist Maggie Reilly, were staples on the old 'NY.

2. Elvis Costello - Watching The Detectives (1977) - Before he became the muse anp partner of jazz pianist Diana Krall, Elvis Costello's geek punk rock persona blew away the rock world with his sardonic wit and storytelling. One such has become a punk classic. The neo noir setting of this song easily conjures up visions of Bogart and Cagney, and Hollywood pulp cinema. He's mellowed out a bit in his old age, but his lyrics are just as biting and sometimes humourous, as they are insightful. A true elder statesman of a lost era of creativity.

3. Right The Stars - Give It All (2012) - You've heard them in TV shows and Honda commercials, and yet, this Los Angeles-based band still maintain their street cred. Included on their follow-up to their 2010 self-titled debut, the band's 80's influence is highly visible on this track. This is most evident on their wonderful cover of the Dream Academy's "Life In A Northern Town" at their MySpace page. Check 'em out every Friday night in April at Molly Malone's in Los Angeles, if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

4. Django Django - Default (2012) - Included on many SXSW visitors "must see" lists this year, this UK based band's single is quickly being added to playlists from Triple J, Australia to modern rock stations around North America and Europe. It's somewhat wonky, digitally altered yodel and psychedelic 60's sound makes it stand out from the sonic crowd. Original and retro. Man, dig that tambourine! Check out their Soundcloud page for various remixes of Default, amongst other tracks.

5. Pieter Embrechts - Dance Me To The End Of Love (2010) - Ok, this Belgian performer doesn't appear to have a MySpace page or an official website. The link here is to an iTunes selection. You'll usually find Pieter backed by his band, The New Radio Kings. It should be noted that he is also an actor.

6. Dr. John - Revolution - Taken from the good doctor's new release, Locked Down, we find the production of the Black Keys Dan Auerbach providing more than just a little of his bands influence. There's a certain retro sound, takin' us back to Na'luns, pre-Katrina, to the night tripper's most primal phase. I just love that farfisa at the end. Welcome back, Doc!

So until next time, stay tuned to the Jive for your eclectic fix of musical expression.

Our Lady Peace: Curve

Our Lady Peace are set to release their lateset album, Curve, on April 17, on eOne Music. Recorded with co-producer Jason Lader (Maroon 5, Elvis Costello), Raine and the boys return with another powerful, boisterous collection of timeless tunes, primed for Modern Rock radio.

The cover features a photo of Canadian heavyweight boxing champ, George Chuvalo, taken in his prime. His "claim to fame" is never being knocked down in 93 professional fights, between 1956 and 1979. No doubt OLP have taken some inspiration from this fact.

The first U.S. single, As Fast As You Can, is available as a free stream. Enjoy it here at Radio Zazoo.

Marilyn Manson - No Reflection

Shout out to Tune Doctor for where I saw this first. Click the link to his site for more info.

Just posted last week. Great to see the old "Sweet Dream"-er back.

Enjoy this totally weird (and what Manson video ISN'T weird….) little film, accompanying his new song, No Refection.

Leningrad Cowboys - Buena Vodka Social Club

I believe I'm a little late in realizing this album's release (Dec 2011/Jan 2012??). That's OK. Better late than never, I guess. If you are not familiar with the Leningrad Cowboys, your best bet is to find (beg, borrow or steal), or preferably buy, the DVD "Leningrad Cowboys Go America". This should serve as the best introduction to the wackiness that is the Cowboys' version of rock and roll.

Not unlike Spinal Tap, this band's genesis came from the somewhat weird mind of Finnish director, Aki Kaurismaki. The cult following of this initial film has led to numerous albums, and live DVD's, as the band became a reality and undertook numerous tours around Europe and the rest of the world. They continue to do so today, as the list of tour dates on their website confirms.

Here's the latest video - "Gimme Your Sushi", taken from Buena Vodka Social Club. As you will see, it is intentionally "bad", a parody of the Japanese videos of the 80's, perhaps? Whatever it is, it is fun. So enjoy......

New Single From The Pale Coming Soon

Dublin's The Pale, famous on this side of the Atlantic, back in the mid-90's, for their single "Butterfly", have been continuing to make music. Word from their website reveals news of their new song, "An Autograph For My Dad", being released sometime in March, with an new album to come late April (I Woke Up and I Was Gone).

Live shows have been kept close to home, as they continue to gig around Dublin. The last couple of years saw them toodling around the Czech Republic, as well as Ireland, on somewhat of a mini tour. Perhaps with the release of the new album, invites may start to come in from some of the showcase festivals in North America (SXSW, NXNE, etc.), and they shall once again be noticed on these shores for their unique brand of music.

For a taste of what's to come, here's an acoustic version, filmed as part of a series of performances around Dublin to celebrate a new phone app.

Lissy Trullie: Truly A Hit, Isn't It?

With the production chops of Bernard Butler (Suede) and John Hill and Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), former model Lissy Trullie has finished her self-titled debut, for release April 10th on Downtown Records. The debut single, "Madeleine" was pre-released as a free download on her RCRD LBL page earlier.

No doubt she will be attracting a lot of buzz when she takes the stage tonight for her showcase at SXSW, at the IFC Crossroads House, tonight at 9 PM, if anyone in Austin is reading this today.

Another song, entitled "It's Only You, Isn't It?" and it's accompanying video, has just been snuck out into cyberspace. I like this one a lot. It's "in-your-face" punk attitude, laid over the visuals of a middle-of-the-night car theft, are a perfect match. Check out her strikingly cool, bad girl good looks, and extreme Lena Lovich-esque vocals, spit out over an opening melody ripped straight from the 80's ska sound of The English Beat. The guitar stabs at the drum beat, before kicking into high gear. It's crunched up high in the mix, making for a stimulating, retro yet original, experience. Check out both in this video. See if you don't agree. Trullie a hit, isn't it?

Orbital: It's A Wonky World!!!

The first new album in eight years from electronic ravers Orbital is about to hit UK store shelves on April 1st - and that's no April Fool's joke! Here's what the press release on their website has to say:

Orbital will release their new album, 'Wonky' on the 1st April in the UK. The first studio album for eight years features vocals by Lady Lesurr and Zola Jesus.

Wonky was recorded in a small studio in Orbital's Brighton home base, then mixed in London with help from internationally acclaimed producer Mark 'Flood' Ellis, whose stellar list of previous collaborators includes PJ Harvey, U2, Nine Inch Nails and The Killers. Paul credits Flood with giving the album a more rounded, holistic sound.

'I mostly remember Flood from all the electronic stuff like Cabaret Voltaire, Depeche Mode and Renegade Soundwave,' Paul says. 'One of his first and greatest loves is electronic music. He's actually got a bigger synthesizer collection than us. He also has a good structural overview of music, because he's not just a dance producer, he comes from a more holistic song viewpoint, which is how we like to approach it. I didn't want to work with just a dance producer because I don¹t think this is a dance album, it¹s an electronic album.'

In advance of the release, they have given us a taste of things to come with this new video.  Entitled "New France", it features the vocals of Zola Jesus. Enjoy, and feel free to comment.

Pirate Broadcast #014

Pirate Broadcast #014 has been blasting out of the cyberspace of Radiojive.com for a couple of weeks now, and yes, I have been negligent in keeping up with the posting of the tracklist.

I hope you all enjoyed the "Zazoothon"……I think we must have caught Earl off guard. Perhaps he was out grocery shopping, or working for that political candidate in his Hollywood neighbourhood.

Anyway, listed below is the Truncated Version of this broadcast. If you listen regularly, tell me in the Comments if you hear the Extended Version, a special 30-minute version that includes Gary Laswell's cover of Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" (taken from his 2009 EP, Covers), and Killing Joke's "Eastern European State"(in honour of their upcoming tour), tacked on the end.

Tell me, which version do you prefer????/

Pirate Broadcast #014

1. Planet Funk - Another Sunrise (2011) - During a trip to Rome last October to visit my daughter and my wife's relatives, I was struck by the diversity of Italian pop radio. Planet Funk are an Italian band, who sing in English, and are based in Florence AND Naples, according to they MySpace page. They recently were climbing the charts with a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "Boots", a one-off track included in a film soundtrack. The video for this can be found here on You Tube.

2. Federico Scavo - Strump (feat. Andrea Guzzoletti) (2011) - Again, another track that I heard in Italy. This novelty dance track was somewhat of a summer club sensation, I was told. Well, it certainly got stuck in my head. Scavo (aka MINIKING), is quickly becoming one of Italy's hottest DJ's. From Ibiza to Miami, his "funky house, influenced with electro/tech" is quickly making him a fan fave. Check out the video for Strump here. Be sure to check out the sample remixes on the Soundcloud list at his My Space page, including a dance mix of Angus & Julia Sone's "Paper Aeroplane" and Pink Coffee's cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall".

3. Tyburn Saints - You Don't Send For Me, I Send For You (2011) - I was turned on to Tyburn Saints by an old friend's musical tastes, as per his Facebook page. A quick trip to their MySpace page reveals this song to be their Featured Song at the moment, and so it should be. A rollicking, retro-sounding track that would not have been out of place back in the late 80's. Based out of Brooklyn, NY, their sound has been christened as "death indie", not unlike Nick Cave's maudlin, haunting sound.

4. Eugene McGuiness - Lion (2012) - OK! I'm sayin' it right now!!!!! Keep your eyes and ears open for this kid. With each recording he's made since 2007, he seems to mature like a fine wine. As soon as I included this track here, he has just gone and released a new single, "Shotgun"…..and boy, what single! Taking a cue (and sample) from Tricky's "Murder Weapon", which in turn is a cue and sample from The Art of Noise's "Peter Gunn", which in turn is a cue and sample from Duane Eddy's original version, Mr. McGuiness delights with a 50's/60's twangy guitar, ripped straight from Tricky's mixing board. Check him out in the latest video (posted a few weeks ago) at his website here.

5. Creature - So High (2011) - Sounding like there's a little of Giorgio Moroder's influence, not to mention one-hit-wonder 90's band, Republica, it seems LA-based Creature are not sitting still with one kind of sound. Check out samples and videos on their sparsely detailed website. It's not on their site, but an old skool rapping style on their gay themed "Prom Prom" song, is used as a great arrangement. The song has also inspired a few fan-compiled videos using found movie footage. Used to wondrous effect, you will never look at Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy the same again after seeing her in the "John Hughes Version". Be sure to watch the Carrie Edit while you're there.

Stay tuned to Radiojive.com for more jammin' the 'jive pirate broadcasts!

French Wives

As reported at Artrocker's website, this band is neither French, nor are they wives.

What they are, is Scottish and indie, and another contender for "nest big thing" status.

A tour through Texas, where they will showcase at this year's SXSW festival in Austin, they will wind their way north through Oklahoma City and Chicago, eventually winding up with a gig at C'est What in Toronto, on the 25th of March, as part of Canadian Muisc Week.

The second single to be released prior to their album, Dream of the Inbetween, is a song called "Younger". With the price of being added to their mailing list, this song is being offered up as a free download from the band's website.

In addition to the song, they have produced this video to accompany it's release.

Spiritualized: New Music Materialized

Spiritualized are poised to return with some new music when Fat Possum Records releases Sweet Heart Sweet Light, whose title was taken from the lyrics of the first song leaked prior to the release date of April 17.

A North American tour is planned, beginning in May.

The Courtesans: UK Erotica Rock

They aren't Spice Girls, but they certainly are spicy!

If you're looking for any details about the band, you'll be hard-pressed to find anything. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of a bio for these saucy sirens. A quick check to their Reverbnation page reveals a historic piece about courtesans, and nothing about the musicians. They actually could be today's version of the Spice Girls or t.A.T.u, formed by audition by a deep pocketed producer. If are you up for some digging, see what else you can find. But don't get them confused with the American power pop band of the same name.

According to the "Touch" link on their website, "The Courtesans live show is a heady blend of Erotica, Live music, Burlesque and intrigue".  The Photography link however, reveals a little bit more (nudge nudge, wink wink): Glamourous stills identified with captions of their names and instrument - Agnes Jones (bass), Saffire Sanchez (guitar), Monica Wild (vocals), Sinead La Bella (vocals), and the aptly named Stix (drums).

For now, they are "one hit wonders" with their spooky, gothic, sappho-esque, R-rated (?) video cover of the Velvet Underground's seminal 1966 track, "Venus In Furs".  Of course, I have included this interestly artsy video for your pleasure. There is also a Soundcloud link on the page to hear just the audio version. But, really, it's just not the same without the visuals.
The next big thing? Or the next big wannabe big? You decide.....

As you all know, I'm a fan of Aussie national radio station, Triple J. Their programmers are top notch, compiling playlists from the best international AND local Australian artists.

On January 25, it was Australia Day down under, a celebration of national pride not unlike what Canada celebrates on July 1. To celebrate musically, Triple J counts down their Hottest 100 of the previous year, as voted by the listeners.

Number One this year was Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know", who's unique video was parodied by Humble + Fred.

A 2-CD compilation of songs picked from the list will be issued shortly, if anyone wishes to order a copy online through the station's website. Previous years discs are also available.

"We're very happy to be part of the Rogers Family," said Glassman. "In fact, from now on we're going to call Bob McCown dad, and Erin Davis can be our mom."

Humble and Fred have been part of the Canadian radio landscape for more than 30 years. "Humble" Howard Glassman started his career in his hometown, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, before moving to Vancouver, Montreal and then Toronto. Patterson has worked exclusively in Toronto. The Humble and Fred Show became the morning show at 102.1 The Edge in 1989 where they were voted the best morning show in Canada four times by the Canadian Music Industry. Now, after six years apart, Humble and Fred are together again, with the same attitude, on a different platform and supported by one of Canada's leading radio broadcasters.
